The Hume Mausoleum Restoration Project

Welcome! This site has been established for the specific purpose of raising funds for the restoration and conservation of the Mausoleum of the great Enlightenment philosopher, David Hume.  This impressive, classical structure was designed by Robert Adam and erected in 1778 in Old Calton Burial ground, Edinburgh, following Hume’s death in 1776. It was a fitting tribute by Scotland’s greatest architect to not only Scotland’s greatest philosopher, but arguably the greatest philosopher ever to write in English.

The Enlightenment made explicit the belief that rational enquiry leads to objective truth. Today, more than ever before we are called upon to defend the values of the Enlightenment – reason and tolerance – against superstition, a corrosive relativism and religious fanaticism.

The Hume Mausoleum

Hume’s Mausoleum is of enormous importance to free thinkers throughout the world both as a symbol of Enlightenment values and a memorial to one of its greatest figures. The aim of this project is to ensure that this remarkable structure is preserved for future generations.
